What Floyd Mayweather did on the ropes was brilliant, because he never actually ducked, well not never, but he often either blocked it with glove or pulled his weight on the rope so the guy misses him completely, exempel Maidana. James Toney was comfortable fighting on the ropes however whenever fighter would throw hook, Toney would duck enough to not get hit clean but still caught behind the head.
Same thing could be said for Pernell Whittaker, he also used shoulder role and would get hit behind the head, he also shown CTE in later years.īoth of them are proclaimed as one of the best defensive fighters ever. Problem with James Toney is that he got hit plenty behind the head, this is something that never happened to Floyd, of course he got hit behind the haead but not to same extend like Toney, that's why i believe Toney has CTE. His defense was so great that it basically allowed him to pretend footwork didn’t exist. This is because he hung out in the pocket and narrowly parried or deflected as many punches as he actually made flat out miss. In short, and as others have said, Toney’s defense was great but it’s less visibly great than someone like Mayweather or Jones Jr. If I remember correctly Toney stood right in front of Jirov and Jirov missed ~80% of his punches. On paper, it looks bad because Jirov landed so many punches, but that’s because he threw an insane amount. The Jirov fight is also a masterpiece in my opinion. He was a master of staying right in front of someone and mitigating their ability to hit him so he could counter, whereas someone like Floyd (especially the money era) was more concerned with pure defense and if a safe counter was there he’d take it. As others have said he was much more agressive than most other boxers that we consider to be defensive masters. In my opinion Toney’s defense is some of the best ever. It took him years to master and I doubt we will ever see anything quite like him again. It's very much old school in every sense of the word and Toney himself admits that when Miller first started teaching him, he would constantly get his ass whipped trying to spar in that rolling, bobbing style. So Toneys boxing style has real, traceable old world roots from Kronk Gym to Miller to Bimstein etc. Bill Miller also worked with legends like Ezzard Charles and even trained Manny Steward when he was a young golden gloves fighter too. The guy was a serious legend in the early 1900s you just never hear about him because he died way back in 1969 before any of us were even born. A lot of young cats never heard of Bimstein but he trained/worked/worked as a cutman with something like 25-30 world champs including guys like Greb, Dempsey, Benny Leonard, Rocky Graziano, Marciano etc. Toney trained with Bill Miller, an incredible old school trainer who himself trained under Whitey Bimstein way back in the paleolithic stone age.
( and Toney speaks like he has a mouthful of marbles I doubt he will ever train anyone.) James style is a throwback to 1930s fighters and will probably never be duplicated again because everyone involved in the lineage is dead now, save for Toney himself. Toney gave up a lot of height and size in his later career yet stayed competitive with his insane skills, where as Floyd and Pernell were fighting guys their own size for the most part. To really appreciate Toney, first stop comparing him to Floyd or Pernell and just watch Toney for who he is.
